linguistics bowl

Our virtual trivia competition for teens interested in linguistics. We hosted three bowls in 2021 (practice questions from each competition can be found here, here, and here) and are hosting another at the Tournament of Fun this summer!

how do we play?

A round has 20 questions, each of which consists of a toss-up (10 points) and a bonus (worth 5).  Questions can include topics from any category of the syllabus (scroll down!).

  • When the moderator starts reading a toss-up, any player on any team may interrupt them by sending the word "buzz" in the chat.  The player is then recognized.

  • When recognized, a player must answer within 10 seconds. Teammates are not allowed to communicate during toss-ups.

  • The moderator will not repeat the question after a player has buzzed.

  • If a player answers the toss-up question correctly, the team earns 10 points and will receive the bonus question.

  • Teams can communicate with each other while answering bonus questions by unmuting themselves.

  • Winning teams will receive ribbons and all participants will receive certificates!
